Rutherford, New Jersey
Rutherford, 07070 is a borough in the county of Bergen, New Jersey. It is named after John Rutherfurd, a past US senator who owned land there once.
The Lenape people were among the first inhabitants of the area. This land was part of the New Barbados Township. Its ownership was transferred from person to person a lot during the 1700s to 1800s. However, it wasn’t until 1852 that the area reverted ownership to the county of Bergen. Much of the land was owned by J Rutherfurd at the time. Around the 1870s, the area began to be referred to as Rutherford. No one knows for sure why the last syllable was changed.
Many people in Rutherford enjoy a relaxing day at one of the town’s numerous parks. The parks were put in place as a way of preserving Rutherford’s often overlooked beauty.
